Chicago Live Burn Demonstration
Not every action SERVPRO of Evergreen Park / South Chicago City takes is after a disaster. The franchise office also works with area Fire Departments on Live Burn Demonstrations. The one shown in the video was set-up to show the importance of sprinkler systems in private homes and not just local businesses.
To the right of the fire is a clock to show just how quickly fire moves. In one minute, the flames have engulfed the entire fire box designed to look like a typical living room. It runs from top to bottom, and every item in the demonstration has some fire damage. Four seconds after that, the clock shows that the sprinklers extinguished the fire completely.
Once the water is turned off, you can see the scorch mark where the fire traveled up the wall. What surprised members of the audience are how little damage there was despite a lot of flame present. In this type of situation, an immediate response from the sprinklers keeps down the destruction caused by the flames and also protects homes from smoke damage which usually results in more costs to the homeowner.
A sprinkler system does cause some water damage, but the costs for that are often much less than the damage flame, and smoke does to a home. Regarding labor alone, it is more cost-effective for a restoration team to dry out floors and carpets than it is to tear out all burned or smoke and soot covered building material. That also means it is quicker for a team to finish the work and make it “Like it never even happened.”
